Ideas for organizing fishing and hunting gear?
General July 21st, 2010There is not a lot of outdoor storage space, and there is no garage- however there is a spare room in the house. I need some ideas for organizing the fishing and hunting gear so that it is easily accessed (not just piled in a box). I am looking for suggestions other than rod holders, gun cases, and tackle boxes- those are in use. As of right now, things are just spread out and in various bags and totes, and are pulled out when needed. There is a lot of stuff. I just want to organize it so it's all together, and in one place. Any suggestions from people who have organized similar things. Is there a company that makes specific storage for things like this? Websites, suggestions, or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you may be a little OCD too me, trust me, it takes one to know one. If you are anything like me you will drive yourself mad trying to organize this stuff just perfectly. I am a long time professional photographer as well as an avid outdoorsman so I have TWO rooms that I organize constantly. I have an obsession with boxes and all sorts of containers to organize everything.
For your sporting room here are a few ideas that I use. I probably own somewhere in the area of about 50 fishing rods from fly rods, spinning rods, baitcasters and offshore rods from small Penns all the way up to Senators. I created rod holders that are on the ceiling using teak. I correctly spaced 1″ x 5″s that run wall to wall (my room is about 9′ x 12′) so I ran 9′ lengths from wall to wall about 6 feet apart. I drilled holes about golf ball sized, evenly spaced from one end to the other on both boards so the butt of the rod goes in one end and the tip through the other. Furthermore I seperated saltwater from fresh so the saltwater rods run one direction and the freshwater run the oppositte. It’s a beautiful sight to behold:).
As for my guns. As much as I would like to display them because some of them are nice antiques and beautiful like my Weatherby’s, you just can’t take the chance of them being in the open anymore so I invested in 3 Browning gun safes, they are beautiful, very secure and it would take 30 men to lift those heavy suckers. All of my long guns are in two of them and the third holds all of my hand guns. I loved the safes so much that I actually bought a 4th one for the photo room which holds an incredible amount of photo gear as well as any other valuable items we may have. In my gun room I have all of my trinkets and special memory type items stored as well. At Sams I found these great what are supposed to be tool boxes but they are too pretty for that. They are solid maple and lined with green felt. They have a lid with a deep recess on top, 6 small drawers and 3 long drawers below.
They make really pretty display boxes. In them I keep any smalller memorabilia, watches, jewelry and just keepsakes in general. They were only like 30 buck a piece and well worth it. I hope this helps you at least a little. Shoot me an email if you have any questions.
