Best GPS for Deer Hunting under $100

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010

I have to admit, I am more of a compass and map guy myself and You still need to bring a good
compass and map and learn how to use them.  It would be fool hardy at best to count on any
electronic device when hunting in an area you don't know.I personally enjoy studying maps and
have a huge collection but that is me.

A GPS is a great new gadget to have for hunters but you still also have to rely on your basic
scouting skills or you could find yourself in a heap of trouble if your GPS stops working
at the wrong time.

There is no perfect GPS and the one that's perfect for you is terrible for someone else.
For a good GPS with the basics;
Waterproof
Durability
Battery life
Maps,
Finding & using accessories

Best GPS under $100

I'd recommend any Garmin E-trex to the price watching deer hunter.

The Garmin 60csx would be a good investment and worth saving for if you want micro sd cards
for multiple maps and is probably the most popular among hunters.
Larger Color Screen makes it easier to view topo maps
Good satellite reception in the woods

Garmin Rino 530 HCx

Has a radio built in to it to contact fellow hunters who also have a Rino, to be honest I have both good and bad reviews on the radio part of it, I don't own one so can't comment myself, but still a great feature to have, read the reviews and decide for yourself.
Color screen
electronic compass
barometric altimeter.

Reviews

I have been GPS shopping for a loooong time! I am only 15 so my mom told me I shouldn't spend too much on a GPS, for I would only be using it for geocaching.... Let me just say this is a GREAT starting unit! It took a while to get used to the controls and all but after a few minutes, my GPS and I are now acquainted. If you are looking for a GPS with maps and navigation, this is NOT for you. This is for people that simply want to go somewhere and get back. It is great for getting you back to your car! The only problem is the battery life because it is drained by the backlight which is ALWAYS needed to be able to see.

For finding your position in the outdoors this unit works very well. It is small and light so you can carry it climbing and backpacking without a problem. The accuracy is good and the unit easy to learn. It does not come with a cable to connect to a computer or very good information of what programs it will work with.

Pros: light, small, fast to fix Cons: No screen to display current position...that's a must have feature. Best to get the next model "up" The only way to know your current position is to make it a waypoint (storage of which is then optional)

It is a very good GPS and a good price for the people who are looking for basic GPS location.

I didn't rate DU because I don't know what that is. My son loves this for just messing around and geocaching. Nice unit!

Reviews

Having an e-trex for several years, I was always frustrated with the lack of mileage accuracy. After all, what hiker wouldn't like to know the distance they have gone. I have to admit I was a bit leery when I purchased such an older model as the 60CXs, but the after my research I concluded the 60CSx was far better than the newer models. I wasn't disappointed, between the speed of acquiring satellites (even indoors) the accuracy and ease of use the 60CSx won't let you down. The only reason I didn't give a 5 is the poor cases and clip on that comes with the 60CSx.

I bought this for my husband years ago for his birthday and it still works! We've brought it with us on numerous trips by car and hiking. I got this one specifically because of it's portability. I didn't like that I had to buy another chip for maps, but it totally worked fine when my husband brought it with him on a business trip and had to drive around puerto rico. We've used it in several middle of nowhere spots as we liked to search for swimming holes (we got coordinates from [...]) and we got great reception. This is definitely one of the best purchases I've ever made. The only thing I would ever recommend if for the manufacturer to make it so that you'd be able to get batteries that would charge in the car. I hate buying batteries for it all the time.

My first GPS but I love it. Used it throughout New Zealand and Australia. Nice and rugged for hiking and horseback riding. Used it mostly for driving. Not fancy like the one's intended for cars but does the job.

Got this item as birthday present and love it. Works quite a bit better than my previous cheaper GPS

Not bad , but not as good as other reviews I read. I'd recommend buying the Oregon for the price difference.

And thanks to the NOAA weather radio, you'll know well in advance when a storm is advancing. Receive detailed mapping information on the navigator's 1.3-by-1.7-inch, 256-color TFT display. Perhaps the most important feature, however, is the crystal-clear 256-color TFT display, which clearly shows attributes from the built-in basemap, including lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Users can also expand the mapping possibilities via the microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Reviews

Rino 530s & 520s are a great blending of GPS and FRS radios. Screens are smaller but with good viewable area. Peer to peer positioning is fantastic. Use for both rec and work. Bought 530HCx to use hiking and FD rescue team ops with several other 520HCX. Works well with Maptech TNP for tracking units on laptop. Pros:Great GPS reception. Viewable screen in sunlight. Good transmit power. Lots of functions. Cons: Heavy weight with Lithium Ion battery(but neccessary for 5 watt transmit). Menu Items across top of screen very small(unreadable). Radio output volume not so good(suggest using with Motorola ear piece/boom mike). Units are expensive! Garmin has you over a barrel with purchasing mapping sofware for each unit(older topo could be loaded on several units). Alkaline battery packs available as back ups( but drop trasmit power allot). Bottom Line; I love the unit and have bought couple Rino 120s for the grandkids. Can track them every where and they constantly want me to trade them the 530 for thier 120s.

We hunt deer, elk and scout year round. Our ages are early 40's through late 60's and we are seasoned successful Gentlemen outdoors enthusiasts. We've all owned other GPS devices and after using this unit, we sold the rest and all own this product. This unit can poll other Garmin 560chx units. If someone gets hurt, we know their location. It can also be set to have the unit be polled should someone not be able to key up and send their location. For those who have back issues, heart issues, health issues....this is a life saftey device that should be with you. The radio portion is strong as is all the menu, feature driven options. Some of us are high tech friendly and others are about as high tech as a marble. Everyone can use this once it is set up and it may take a tech savvy person to set it up originally. Well worth the money speant and I purchased a second one so my wife, kids or buddies are all connected and safe when we go outdoors.

I purchased the Rino 530HCx in January 2009. It has excellent reception, even inside most buildings. I have used it primarily for fishing/atv use, and I won't leave home without it. I haven't used the locate feature that much with other Rino users, but a friend of mine uses it for snowmobiling and he says it works great when you are spread out over a couple of miles. Accuracy has typically been +- 12 ft (3 m) or better when outdoors and I've typically had 7-8 satellites most of the time which is about the best to expect right now with the number of satellites in the sky for the US. This is about the best any brand of GPS will be able to get. The joystick navigation button is very easy to use and the menus are fairly intuitive. I've hardly ever looked at the user manual. The unit comes with a basemap, but it only includes major highways and cities and not much else. I've invested in the City Navigator and Lakemaster (MN) maps. The City Navigator is ok, but if you are looking to use this mostly for highway driving, I would look at the Nuvi or something similar. I can't say how much more fun fishing has been using the Lakemaster map with this GPS. It puts you right on the spot you want to be at with ease. One issue I did have is that my radio transmission (sending) did not work after about 10 months and also the temperature reading was off as well. I could hear everyone, but no one could hear me. Luckily I was under the 1 year warranty timeframe, and Garmin replaced the unit with a new one. So far so good with the new unit after another 6 months of use. I've used the Garmin software for a PC and a MAC (currently using this one). I think the software for the MAC is even easier to use yet. Very simple to upload/download POI's and tracks. Even with the issue I mentioned, it has been everything I was hoping for with a GPS/radio combination. I would definitely recommend any of the Rino units.

I love it. Use it for hunting. It's great for plugging all those waypoints in so I can return to exact spots. The maps that come with it aren't great but I downloaded the 2008 usgs topos (awesome). Very pleased. Walkie-talkie combo is nice, I dont have to have a load of devices to carry around with me. And the weather updates are great when camping with no radio or t.v.

Excellent gift for my husband at a great price. My husband loves his Garmin and all the great features that it has.

Buck Hunting knives with Gut Hook

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2010

A good Hunting Knife is one of your most important pieces of equipment, You"ll need this to make
incisions in the animal for field dressing - it will come in handy for skinning as well.
Whether you choose a fixed or folding blade is up to you, but experts agree you should pick a
knife you"re comfortable using and bring along a stone to sharpen it.

It does take some learning to use a stone properly so a better bet might be to use a sharpener.
I do like a good gut hook knife myself, not to fond of serrated, the serrated edge seems to get messed
up easily, and I like a knife I can sharpen, but that is just me, others have their own opinion.

Description

BSC200162GPS Fullfield. A name that has long been synonymous with high performance at an affordable price. And the latest generation of Fullfield II scopes lives up to the line's reputation for optical accuracy and rugged dependability. For example, Fullfield II's incorporate more forgiving fore/aft, left/right eye positioning and combine lighter weight with shorter length and added strength. Features: -Fullfield II eliminated most of the potential leak paths in the eyepiece/ power ring area and sealed the rest with special quad seals rather than O-rings. -Fullfield moved the adjustment system to improve mounting options and the European-style adjustable eyepiece requires no locking mechanism. -Trajectory Compensation. Ballistic Plex and Ballistic Mil-Dot are simple ways to improve long range marksmanship. -The lower part of the crosshair has ballistic lines that compensate for bullet drop from 100 yards to 500 yards and beyond. -Extremely robust outer tubes and internal components. -Adjustment system is repeatable steel on steel with audible clicks. -Double internal spring force. -Some of the competition competitors offer a double spring whereas the double spring is the STANDARD for all Burris products. -Burris uses specially made quad seals to provide double insurance against leakage.

Features

  • 3x-9x-40mm rifle scope fully multicoated lenses with ballistic plex reticle. Comes with Garmin Etrex GPS
  • Fog proof, water proof, shock proof with a forever warranty.

Reviews

I bought this for the scope. The clarity is great. The sun was setting behind my target and I still could see clearly with no glare. crosshairs are very sharp as well. Did not drop my zero on my .223 rifle.

This is a very good quality day-to-day scope. Nice and clear for the price. Also, the GPS is a very accurate entry level unit that you should find is a great steal along with this scope. High value package.

Burris Rifle Scopes, Fullfield II

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010

I have been searching for rifle scopes made in the U.S.A. in 2010. The reason is simple, I like to support  American Jobs as most of us do. I could be wrong but I have yet to find any that are 100% made in America, still if they are still creating American jobs I still like to support them.

I still have a Burris Scope that I purchased 10 years ago, the clarity is as sharp as the day I bought it.
Mine is a Burris pistol scope mounted on a T/C Contender 45/70, after years of shooting very stout handloads ,this scope has never had one problem and the clarity is magnificent.

The most popular Burris Scope series and economical now is the "Fullfield II." Some time ago Burris had a decision to make, expenses were rising but price of their Fullfield Scopes were not. They did not want to take quality out of the scopes, yet still wanted to make them as affordable as possible to the American Consumer so they began producing Fullfield II scopes with lower labor costs in the Philippines.

I believe some of their other scopes are still made in the U.S. in Greeley, Colorado, but to keep the
Fullfield Series affordable they had no choice, can't fault them for that.

I have friends that have purchased the new Fullfield II and love em, I expect to be buying more Burris products in the future, still say they make one of the best pistol scopes around and with a lifetime warranty you can't go wrong here.

Leupold Scopes, Made in America

Posted by admin on February 22nd, 2010

Hi, thanks for stopping by, I'm sure you are here to see why Leupold should be your next rifle Scope Purchase.

Here a just a few reasons:

Leupold made it's name with great customer service and providing lifetime maintenance and repair of their products, even if you are not the original owner, If you intend to keep your rifle scope for a while you have to consider warranty service, you'll probably need it and Leupold leads the way.
Leupold is a great hunting scope, best overall package of;

  • Light Weight
  • Compact
  • Reliability
  • Size
  • Eye Relief
  • Non-critical eye relief
  • Optical Performance

Leupold has great screw on lens covers.  When you have your deer in sight just flip up the covers and shoot, no need for rain  guard. that won't help you when you brush against a tree and knock snow in your scope!  If you hunt in the woods as I do, it makes all the difference, flip up covers are where it is and Leupolds are the best.

In 1907, Fred Leupold set up a one-man shop at 5th and Oak streets in Portland to repair surveying equipment. He was joined by his brother-in-law, Adam Voelpel, and later by inventor John Cyprian Stevens, and the foundations for a century of success were in place. During Leupold’s second half-century, the company focused heavily on the sports optics business. Leupold’s presence in the hunting and shooting market expanded with innovative optics and features that are now legendary among hunters, shooters, and outdoors enthusiasts. Many of the industry’s standards--nitrogen waterproofing, the Duplex reticle, and more--were Leupold creations.

I use this on my Varmint gun. It has great optics and complements a very accurate gun. I got it when it was marked down to 300 dollars which was an unbeatable price. The next closest competitor was about 150 dollars more.

Until you use a 50 dollar optic from china, you wont know how to appreciate high quality scopes such as this. The clarity is outstanding...you really notice when there's a limited amount of light because it is indeed, brighter when peering through the scope. I love it, and I'm sure you will too.

For $219 this scope, now made by leupold and to their standards, is an excellent buy. I zeroed in with 270 and the sight picture is bright and clear. The accu-range reticle is my choice, as the the center is a clear circle with a mil dot just below for next hundred yard correction. I bought thru Amazon and received excellent service from Optical Planet. I really like this scope.

More than awsome value for the price. I looked at scopes costing twice as much, and thought they were no better than the Redfield, so I bought two.

Homemade Venison Sausage Recipes

Posted by admin on February 16th, 2010

There are a few things to remember when making homemade venison sausage

  • If you are going to smoke it you must cure it, 1 tsp of Instacure or prague powder#1 is needed to prevent botulism!
  • Meat used to be smoked as a means of preservation and still is, but mostly we smoke for flavor now.
  • When smoking fresh sausage always hang-dry it first.
  • Make sure that the sausage stays cool or bacteria will develop.
  • After stuffing your fresh sausages,  hang until casings are dry
  • You don't have to smoke it, you can make your venison sausage and freeze it with no need to to use a cure. For best taste freeze no more than 3 months, although we have been known to go a lot longer than that with no ill effect.
  • If you have a lot of leftover casings, rinse, drain and pack them in salt, then store in the refrigerator or cooler in the basement.
  • If you are not using a cure in your sausage, don’t smoke it!
  • For a wild meat sausage like venison, fat needs to be added. Wild meat is too lean and will make a dry sausage if the fat content isn’t increased.
  • You want a 20% fat mix with your venison, you can use 1 or a combination of all, fatty pork shoulder or trimmings, pork butt, pork back fat,Boston butt, bacon.
  • Always use natural casings, Hog casings are easiest to come by but sheep casings are great!
  • .Casings are normally bought soaking in brine or packed in salt, you must make sure you rinse them inside and out before you use them. Rinse with cold water and then place in warm water at the stuffing table, make sure casing has water running through it before placing on the filling horn.
  • You don't have to use casings, you can just grind it up, mix it up and freeze it, when you are ready just thaw and make patties or make patties ahead of time, separate with parchment paper and freeze in ziplock bags

The main thing to remember when making Venison Sausage is there is always someone who does not like onions, garlic, or some spice you add in there. While adding spices, take a little bit and fry it on the stove until you get just
the right spice mix for your family, if they don't like it, there will never be a time when you all enjoy it.
If you really know your family and friends you know what they like or don't like and can tolerate.
Don't just asume that if they don't like onions it is because they just don't like onions, my father in law loved
onions only to find out later in life his body could no longer tolerate onions. It is the same with hot sauce, peppers
some can tolerate it some can't. I myself used to eat peanut butter on everything when I was a kid only to find out
later in life that if I even look at it I get queasy.

What I have found is, the best way is to separate your sausage from the beginning and label it.
With Onions
No Onions
With onions and hot sauce or hot peppers
Without onions and with hot sauce
If you are so inclined you can add the whole ingredient list on the label, but I have found it is usually just the
onions and hot sauce, peppers, flakes that folks have a problem with.

These recipes can be used for fresh or smoked Venison sausage, just remember if you smoke it you must use a cure also.
If using fresh and not smoked you must cook before eating.
Mix and match anyway you see fit.

Spicy Venison Sausage

6 1/2 lbs of trimmed venison
3 1/2 lbs of pork, see above
1-cup cold red wine
1-cup chopped fresh parsley
5-3 tablespoons kosher salt
5 garlic cloves, minced
1-tbsp fresh ground pepper
3-tsp cayenne or crushed red pepper flakes
5-tbsp fennel seed
2-tsp crushed chili peppers
5-tbsp paprika
1 tablespoon rubbed sage
3 tablespoon medium ground black pepper
5-tbsp fennel seed
5-tbsp paprika
1 tbsp Mustard seed
1 tablespoon rubbed sage
1 cup minced onion or 1 Tbls onion powder
1 cup ice water

Maple Syrup Venison Sausage

6 1/2 lbs of trimmed venison
3 1/2 lbs of pork, see above
3 teaspoons dried thyme
2 teaspoon dried marjoram
2 tablespoons kosher salt
2 tablespoons rubbed sage
1 tablespoon fine ground black pepper
1 teaspoon Paprika
1 teaspoon 5 spice
1 teaspoon Mustard Seed
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 cup real maple syrup
1/2 cup ice water

Trim the venison
Cut it and the pork into 1 inch cubes, and grind through the medium plate of your meat grinder.
Seperate into 2 or 3 containers
Add your seperate spice mixes to each container, with onion, without, with hot spices, without
When you have cooked a little of each mixture and are satisfied with the taste
Mix spices with 1 cup of ice water.

Pour spice water combination into the ground meat and mix thoroughly for at least 2 minutes.
Your hands are really best for mixing.

Stuff it immediately into casings and cool it down.

Can be stuffed into casings or package bulk for patties.

Can also be finished in a smoker

Stores in freezer for 3 months, much longer if you use a vacuum sealer.

I really never saw the need for a vacuum sealer until a hunting buddy brought one a couple of years ago,
Wow, I can't begin to tell you the difference between that and a ziplock bag, there really is no comparison
I really think you could keep meat in the freezer for 10 years and not know the difference, it is that good.

Description

The VacMaster VP 210 Chamber Machine provides a solution to the problem posed by vacuum packaging machines currently on the market: how to vacuum package liquids and liquid-rich foods. Current machines on the market are suction machines, meaning air is vacuumed out of the vacuum bag, then the bag is sealed. However, along with the air, liquids are also vacuumed out of the bag, leading to partial or failed seals. The VP210 Chamber Machine uses different technology to eliminate this problem. When sealing with our chamber machine, the vacuum bag to be sealed is placed inside the chamber of the machine, and the lid is closed. Then air is sucked our of the entire chamber, not just the bag, allowing the air pressure on the inside and outside of the bag to remain equal and liquids to stay in the bag. The bag is then sealed, and the air let back into the chamber. In addition, the chamber machine can reach a higher level of vacuum. Most suction machines obtain a 24-26 hg level of vacuum, while chamber machines are able to obtain a 27-29 hg level of vacuum.

Features

  • Bag to be Sealed is Placed Inside Machine
  • Chamber Machines reach a Higher Level of Vacuum
  • Great for Liquids including Soups, Stews and Marinades
  • Store Fish an meats Scent Free
  • Eliminate Waste of Bulk Food Quantities

Reviews

This is what you use to vacuum seal and do sous vide cooking. Only issues is it weighs 90 pounds and make sure you oil the motor or you will have problems. This is a chamber vacuum and you must use 3 mil bags you cannot use foodsaver bags as those are channel vacuum bags completely different I returned the item because I cannot lift 90 pounds so using it would be a problem as I have no permanent spot for it

This performs exactly as described. Very easy to use, maintain and operate. Great for any type of food. We did have issues with the shipping (item had been dropped and lid was cracked), but Amazon did a great job to resolve it. We sent it back (about 100 dollars) and they sent a new one 1-day overnight shipping (probably cost a lot since it's 100 pounds). We were re-reimbursed for the shipping expenses within 5 days. Overall, great experience and love using this on everything.

will definitely order from them again Thank you for fast shipping and quality product.

First, I could not believe how quickly I received this product. Second, the casing worked great. I simply followed the instructions for preparing the casing along with the instructions from the sausage stuffer and everything turned out great. The whole experience exceeded ny expectations. The Boerwors I made with it was a huge hit!

I haven't used my casings yet (this will be my first time making sausage)but I give 5 stars for excellent service. Also, she recyles, so although the packaging was a little odd, I knew that it was because she is trying to operate a "green" business.

Even though it is a 8 oz package, there are actually lots of casing. you can use arround 50lb of meat on it. the quality is pretty good also. great buy!

I ordered these just a few days ago. Haven't used them yet, but like this sellers attention to customer care. Thanks, by the way I looked and found some other "gotta have" stuff in your store so expect me to return. Respectfully, Future Sausage King of Edmond, OK

Reviews

I have only used this product for 35mm casings but it worked well. It is a lot easier to do than the Kitchen Aid way I have been doing it!

This thing works absolutely great. It churns out the sausage easily and quickly, and is a snap to clean. I started making sausage with the Kitchen Aid stuffer, which was a total pain, then moved on to the plunger type stuffer, which was a terrible purchase. Finally I saw the light and spent the extra money on this product and could not be happier.

Item arrived today. I visited a local butcher store yesterday in anticipation of the product. Until now, I had been using the sausage stuffer attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer. The Kitchenaid stuffer was awful. It essentially did a bad re-grind of the meat, and you got to wrestle the meat through the attachment for nearly an hour with a mere 3 pounds of meat. (I watched Alton Brown of "Good Eats" fame do this, but his attachment had a different feeder... and it was still slow.) I read the reviews of the other "cheap" stuffers and decided they would be money wasted. (If a $10 Kitchenaid attachment was poor, and a $40 press stuffer was worse, it was time to rethink things.) Meanwhile, the NI stuffer worked as advertised. Shipping included, it actually cost less than my trip to the butcher for the meat I ran through it when it arrived. Plus side: * reasonably priced. Considering how well it worked, I am not sure what higher-priced models could offer other than a motor. * easy to set up, disassemble, clean. The instructions are laughably minimal. Fortunately, they are nearly unnecessary. * engineering is very smart. O-ring and valves are just right. Waste is minimal. Neutral: * you really need to make or find a table you can mount this to. I had my son help and also tried to just hold by hand. (I couldn't find my old wood clamps which might have helped.) If you're good with a drill and some bolts, this isn't really a problem. Down side: * the smallest feeder does NOT handle the 19mm jerky sized casings. The Kitchenaid feeder does, but with the aforementioned difficulties. Fortunately, I also own a jerky-stuffer. But if making thin breakfast sausage or slim-jim clones is your thing, this is the wrong product. Despite the lack of a 19mm stuffing tube, I still give this a 5-star. It's solidly constructed, easy to use and I expect a lifetime of good use from it.

Was about to buy the lever type stuffer (about 39) when I read the review of the guy who used this one for making sausage from 20 deer and changed my mind. For the last 8 years have been making sausage (45lbs) for a St Joe's Day Party, it would take 4 + hrs with an electric stuffer. This one is a dream. Did it in half the time. Not only is it will constructed - some good thought went into the engineering. Almost effortless and very little stuffing left at end of cycle.

This 5 lbs sausage stuffer is easy to use, fast, and easy to clean. I have tried the Kitchen Aide sausage stuffing attachment and there is absolutely no comparison. This stuffer sets up in minutes and can be used by one person if it is bolted to a table or a steady base. Stuffers with an auger drive essentially reprocess your sausage, the piston drive found in this product does not. It takes about 10 minutes to stuff 5 lbs. of sausage with this machine. You could easily spend a lot more money for very little additional functionality. This is a best buy!

Reviews

I am not easily impressed. But, wow!!, the Smoke Hollow smoker was easy to assemble and performs beautifully. My first batch of smoked salmon (dry-brined, then 3 hrs with alder chips) was the best I have ever eaten. The control of temperature is exact and steady. This is a well engineered smoker. Briskets and ribs have also been excellent. I look forward to doing turkeys in November. I am truly impressed.

Almost a great smoker except for two problems. Main issue is it burns too hot. If I use the "LOW" setting the temp is around 300. If I use medium, the temp is 450. I haven't had the courage to use the high setting yet. What is especially irritating about this is that if you read other reviews of their products, you find that this is a long running problem with Smoke Hollow products. They know they are too hot and they don't feel any need to make their products work right. Some reviewers say they contacted company and got a different jet--I contacted the company and I've never heard back. Second issue is just general grousing about the cheap junk quality of their nuts and bolts. Nuts are press fit so you can just screw the bolt in and not bother about holding the nut in place--only even a small cross fit and the barrel nut breaks loose and then you have fun. Also the bolts are cheap pot metal and mush fairly easily. The door handle is press fit and it fell off in my hand when I was trying to mount it. The holes for the right side handle were drilled about 3/8" too low on mine--couldn't use one position for the trays because the handle bolts are in the way. 3/8" isn't much but when you are machining metal, you hope to get closer than 3/8". There's A, B, and C labeled nut/bolt plastic bags, which is nice, but they didn't include B in my packaging. The actual design of the box, the layout and size, are excellent. That's what makes it so extremely sad that they didn't take the time to finish the job.

Bought this model (34168G) as I was looking for a smoker and wanted something easy to use. I almost went electric but finally decided on propane due to cost savings. This smoke was fairly easy to put together and works very well; my only issue is that I wish I would have bought the next size up. A whole rack of ribs doesn't fit into this smoker and I have to cut them in half. This model has a grill width of 20 inches and most racks of ribs are a bit bigger.

I use this as a secondary smoker for when I don't want to spend all day and/or all night tending my offset firebox. It definitely has the advantage of being able to walk away for hours at a time, once you have these initial issues worked out... 1) It puts out too many BTUs to maintain a steady 225 degrees. After research I found two resolutions... One involved putting a secondary regulator between the main regulator and the burner. I forget the name of the device, but opted to not do that. My concern would be wind blowing out the smaller flame and propane reaching the burning wood. Boom! Instead I drilled a hole on the top of the unit and essentially added a chimney. That did the trick. At least it did with 70 degree outdoor temperatures. I'll be curious how it performs on a 90+ degree day. 2) Not enough smoke flavor. I've read it's best to replace the wood box with something larger, like a coffee can. I've not yet tried this, but assuming the larger can will fit, I think it will resolve that problem. 3) Don't trust the built in temp gauge. Get a couple probe thermometers. One for the meat, one for the internal temp of the smoker. Made the best brisket I've ever done in this unit, and I got some sleep too! There's still nothing like all wood smoking, but for those days where you want some BBQ and not spend most of the weekend standing near a fire, this is a great unit.

I decided to wait on writing a review on this purchase till I used the smoker for a few months. So here goes... For a gas smoker I believe this thing is about as good as it gets. It has a great design so far as a vertical smoker - the smoker box is located directly above the gas burner so it creates constant smoke so long as it is loaded with chips. I've noticed however that to get the wood chips smoking good, one needs to turn the burner up to medium or high for a few minutes initially and then go back down to low. I've done so far several racks of baby backs and spare ribs, chickens and pork shoulder and this thing imparts a thick pink smoke ring, even on the pork butt. In fact, the smoke ring on the ribs goes to the bone - they even taste kind of sweet and "hammy" from so much smoke. The cabinet, hinges and door handle are constructed well and do not feel flimsy. The racks are strong and of high quality as is the water bowl and burner. The door has a thermometer placed such that it displays an accurate temperature (I have verified the temp is accurate with a separate internally placed oven thermometer). In all my smoking with this unit so far I've not had any drippings get around the water bowl and fall to the bottom of the cabinet or burner area so this is a plus. The gas burner, valve, hose and regulator also seem to be of high quality and the smoker so far seems to be a miser so far as gas consumption is concerned. However one negative is that this thing seems to run a little hot for my taste unless you load it with lots of meat. For example, it's difficult to maintain stable/constant internal cabinet temps less than 250 degrees. I've had to fiddle with trying to close the propane tank valve and the cabinet damper to maintain my preference of very low and slow cooking temps when for example only one rack of ribs is cooking. I plan to contact the manufacturer and see if they can provide me with a different gas regulator that may support cooking at lower temps... Overall this smoker is a real winner for a gas smoker and if I had it to do over I would buy it again and would also recommend it to anyone needing a simple to operate, well-built gas smoker unit.

However, recognize that this is a HOT smoker. If you are looking to smoke your Venison  for long-term preservation, this is not the unit to use. Because of its small size, with the heat turned high enough to produce adequate smoke, you will easily reach temperatures of 250-300 degrees inside the pan, hot enough to roast many meats your food is cooking as it is smoking. If you love the smoked taste in Venison sausage and don't have an outdoor smoker this is the perfect smoker for you and you don't have to cure it. Line the drip pan with foil before you use it, makes cleaning a lot easier. The sausages came out awesome.

works great, but smokes a little to much.tried to "adjust" as per instructions but not much help, other than that i smoked some ribs and they were great!cleanup not so easy but o.k.next time will try aluminum foil on bottom.

I read all the reviews about this smoker. All the good reviews were exactly correct. All the bad reviews make me think some don't read instructions or expect something that the product is incapable of delivering. This smoker does exactly was is says. First, I chose super saver shipping which usually takes a while to deliver...Thank you Amazon it was delivered in 4 days. And secondly, I've already smoked chicken, pork chops, salmon, yummy!! Easy to do, easy to clean. Yes, there was a little smoke escaping, but there's "tweaking" instructions for what to do in that case. I found it easiest to cover the entire smoker with a wet dish towel (big enough to drape the edge a little). It has been fun experimenting with the sample wood chips and the cookbook was also helpful. It will get blackened; it tells you it will. For easy clean up they recommend using foil in the drip tray, it works. I love kitchen gadgets especially when they perform...this one won't let you down!

I bought this because I vaguely remembered Emeril using something similar on his TV show. I forgot that his "set" had a big industrial exhaust fan over the stove that blew fumes out into the city. I have a "builder's standard" oven hood, like 99% of Americans that blasts the exhaust right back into the room. Using this smoker on a stovetop inside your house is not unlike lighting a campfire on your living room carpet and then puttng it out with wet hickory-soaked blankets. You probably don't have enough windows to open to clear the stink in a reasonable amount of time. After 3 days, I'm considering pulling down the drapes and dragging the furniture to the curb. I've already taken all our reeking clothes to the incinerator. I suggest you buy this along with a hotplate and restrict it to backyard usage only. Enjoy.

I've used this smoker for portabello mushrooms, fish, chicken, veggies, etc. Everything comes out wonderful. I just don't suggest attempting a whole chicken using foil over the top since the lid won't otherwise fit. That was disastrous! Couldn't see in front of you in the house (and it's 3000 sq ft) and fat dripped out of pan and onto cooktop. What a mess. Otherwise, this is a great invention. I highly recommend the book "Smokin': Recipes for Smoking Ribs, Salmon, Chicken, Mozzarella, and More with Your Stovetop Smokers.

I've owned a Cameron stove top smoker for a long time, used it occasionally, and never have thought it is worth the trouble and mess. It is virtually impossible to make smoke-free, so unless you have a really good stove hood, don't even think about it. It would be a good device to take on an outing where you're going to cook outdoors, however, either over a camp grill or with a portable stove, and the smokiness of the environment is not a concern. It is really hard to clean once you use it and the wood powders available to use with the smoker are pretty expensive. I smoked fresh caught fish of all types for many years using a standard electric smoker, so I am not a newbie at this, but if you are going to use it indoors, don't bother unless you like a smoky kitchen and a really messy kitchen contraption to deal with afterwards.

Venison Burger Recipe

Posted by admin on February 14th, 2010

Tasty Venison Burgers that stick together!

Our family loves Venison Burger, however there are plenty of folks that don't care for the taste
and it is very dry and hard to make a hamburger just as it is, It does not stick together like a
regular hamburger would, so you need to spice it up a bit.

I don't know about you, but paying for the deer to be processed is not an option for us anymore,
just can't justify the expense, so we have taken to butchering and processing our own deer.
You can make burger out of everything, rib meat, hindquarter, neck, just make sure to clean all the
fat off before you grind it.

We will then decide how much we are going to grind up for burger, sausage, Jerky and seperate.
Sometimes we will grind up some pork roast with the venison, and some we leave plain. We will
make these burgers and freeze them.

These are best made in a cast iron skillet.

This is for 4lbs of meat, our hunting party gets together and processes all our meat at the same
time so we can end up with 90 lbs of burger or more to make, at the end of the day it is well worth
the time spent to have healthy and tasty burgers all year.

Ingredients

  • 6 minced bacon "optional"
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 cup finely chopped onion, can replace with a tbsp of onion powder
  • 4 pounds ground venison
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt and pepper
  • 4 eggs beaten
  • 1 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard

Cook the bacon first and let it cool and just crumble it, leave it in the grease. Mix all the ingredients
I then just take the whole lot and throw it in between 2 pieces of wax paper and roll it out as flat as I
can. Next form into the burger size you want and place in ziplock bags with wax paper in between all the
burgers and freeze. Enjoy your Venison Burgers all year round.

This skillet is perfect for my family. Plenty of room. Heats up fast. Easy to clean. Pre-seasoning is great! I've used it for baking the best light and golden biscuits. It just fits in my 30" oven. Does very well on my gas stove top for sauteing and even deep frying. If you have a crowd to cook for you can't go wrong with the Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned 17-inch Cast Iron Skillet.

the skillet is pre seasoned..wash it out with hot water and your ready to cook,,it's a big cooking surface, you need a large burner to heat this evenly,or over a rack on a campfire or turkey fryer propane heater ..you can raise it up a couple of inches over a gas stove eye so the flame will heat evenly.use 3 or 4 fire bricks,or half bricks,on their flat side,,, to set it on to raise it up...heat this big skillet up slowly, don't put it over a high flame right away.give the metal time to stretch .once it's hot you can keep the heat down where water droplets will dance a little in the pan,,it's big enough to cook a couple of lbs. of bacon and six or seven eggs just as the bacon is ready to take out..put big slabs of ham or a dozen eggs to fry...or two cut up chickens..you get the idea,,clean up in hot water,,just rub the pan with a non metal pad till the surface is clean,,then dry it real good with a paper towel..then rub in a thin coat of cooking oil to keep it ready to go the next time..don't use soap, comet, babbo, ajax or other cleaners..they are great for stainless or aluminum but...it'll ruin the seasoning and non stick qualities of any cast iron skillet, pot, dutch oven etc.....keep a couple of hot pads ,leather gloves, oven mitts,,close by to grab the hot handles if you have to move this skillet..after cooking you can sit this skillet on a wood cutting board or hot pads in the center of the dinner table will all the stuff you have cooked up and serve right out of the pan,,,keeps everything warm... ..use the wide tin foil if you need a lid or cover..you can cook for a lot of folks with this Lodge Cast Iron Skillet,,,your gonna love it,,,Bryan C in Idaho....

Love this high quality pan! If I have one fault..storage. Make sure you are prepared to have space for this very large and heavy pan.

I mostly make deep dish pizza in this skillet because it is huge, very deep and the pizza comes out great. It's my first iron skillet so I really do appreciate reviewers comments and suggestions. The first couple of times I used this it did smoke until I read about keeping the heat low to medium. Bingo that solved the problem. My suggestion Foodnetwork.com has great deep dish recipes. I store this bad boy in the bottom drawer of my oven. It's that big.

I have all cast iron and I needed a larger pan for deep dish pizza. This big boy is great. Made pizza last night it was so good! One problem, I can't close the door all the way on the oven. I have a viking wall oven. It cooked great anyway, but I was shocked when it wouldn't fit. I told my husband I now need a commercial size oven.

I have used these pop-up sheets of deli wrap waxed paper (12" x 10.75") for several years. It is a toss-up whether they or the pop-up sheets of aluminum foil are the handiest. First rate product.
